As the days get longer and temperatures begin to rise, it’s easy to shift focus outdoors—BBQs, garden projects, open windows, and lighter evenings. But with the change in season comes a different set of fire risks that are often overlooked.
This week’s Test It Tuesday is all about staying one step ahead as we move into spring and summer.
🌼 Why Seasonal Changes Matter
Warmer weather doesn’t reduce fire risk—it changes it.
In fact, spring and summer often introduce new hazards, both at home and in the workplace:
Increased use of electrical equipment (fans, outdoor lighting, tools)
More cooking activity, especially with BBQs
Dry conditions increasing the risk of outdoor fires
Windows and doors left open, affecting fire containment
Now is the perfect time to review your fire safety measures and ensure everything is still working as it should.
✅ This Week’s Test It Tuesday Checklist
Take 5–10 minutes today to run through these key checks:
🔔 Smoke & Heat Alarms
Test all alarms—don’t assume they’re working
Replace batteries if needed
Check coverage in all key areas (especially kitchens and hallways)
🔌 Electrical Safety
Inspect plugs, sockets, and extension leads
Avoid overloading sockets (common with fans and seasonal equipment)
Look for signs of overheating or damage
🔥 Escape Routes
Ensure exits are clear and accessible
Check that fire doors close properly
Consider how open windows or doors might impact fire spread
🧯 Fire Equipment
Confirm extinguishers are in place and within service date
Ensure staff know where equipment is located and how to use it
🍖 Seasonal Risk Spotlight: BBQs & Outdoor Fires
With BBQ season approaching, it’s worth highlighting a few key points:
Never use BBQs indoors or on balconies
Keep them well away from buildings, fences, and dry materials
Never leave them unattended
Ensure they are fully extinguished after use
These may seem obvious—but they are a common cause of preventable fires every year.
👥 A Quick Reminder for Teams
